Olympiads in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics.

The students are initially selected through a nationwide screening test from among applicants with at least 75% marks in their SSC or O-level examinations, studying in FSc/A-Level (Part-I).

Subsequent selection is done through a series of training camps through a process of teaching and testing.

Fifty selected students will be invited to a series of training camps in different home institutions, including National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE), Faisalabad for Biology; HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, Karachi for Chemistry; School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS), GCU Lahore for Mathematics; and PIEAS, Islamabad for Physics.

In 2009, Pakistani students participated in the International Olympiads for the fourth time and won seven Bronze Medals and two Honorable Mentions. It is worth mentioning here that students selected and groomed under NSTC have also been able to secure admissions with scholarships for their higher studies in top ranking universities such as Stanford, MIT, Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Caltech, Mc Gill, University of Toronto and Oxford etc.

Skill Development Council, Deputy Chairman, Muhammad Aslam Bhutta has unveiled a comprehensive training program on AutoCAD here on Tuesday. While inaugurating the programme he said that this will introduce students to the processes, tools, and methodology of computer drafting with AutoCAD, the world’s leading software for design and drafting.

He underlined the acquisition of knowledge and skill for eliminating of poverty and unemployment from the country. This multipurpose class is intended for those who have little or no experience with AutoCAD. During the course, students will acquire basic skills used for AutoCAD software and design techniques toward various applications.
Bhutta said, “If you love watching your work become a reality? Then design and shape the world around you with the
powerful, flexible features found in AutoCAD design and documentation software.” It is important that more and more AutoCAD users are venturing out of their traditional and familiar two-dimensionalworld to explore the possibilities of 3D space.

Thanks to many software enhancements in this area, 3D is an increasingly useful and widespread tool. However, the leaps into three dimensions require some changes in thinking and drawing habits. Out of seven participants three are from UET, Texila and belong to Bangladesh, one each from Oxford Brookes University, London, Pakistan Meteorological Department, Air University, Telenor Pakistan. Referring to the programs of the Council, Deputy Chairman said that it is focusing to maximize the potential of participants through the acquisition of knowledge and skill; it also provides extra ordinary on-target training and motivation of honesty, quality, self respect, performance & integrity to all participants to prepare the nation to respond to the needs of the country.

Some 1200 male and female students admitted to different dsiciplines of engineering in Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology were provided the vision and academic guidance at an “orientation ceremony” held here Monday prior to start of regular classes right from today.
Addressing the ceremony, Chancellor SSUET and President Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys Association, Engr Z.A. Nizami gave a broad outline of the vision behind the establishment of this University.
He pointed out that this university was named after great reformer and educationist Sir Syed Ahmed Khan who had refused establishment of any educational institution after his name during his lifetime but had consented to if anyone established an institution after his death and named after him.
Mr Nizami said that Aligarh University was an institution for which no person less than founder of Pakistan Quaid-e-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah had profound respect and love.
He said that this University’s world-wide reputation can be judged from the fact that its web site had over half a million hits since its establishment.
Chancellor SSUET informed that this university, which has Pakistan’s biggest computer lab and best faculty, has academic agreements with 18 renowned universities of USA and UK.

He told the new entrants that students graduating from here do not ind any problem in having a job as their CVs are sent to some 3600 mployers nation-wide and score of its graduates were today serving World-wide on good positions.
Mr Nizami said that one significant feature of SSUET is that no political activity takes place here as all the political parties have given their commitment in this regard.
He said the University gets lot of financial help and assistance which is passed on to deserving students and the fact is that no students left without admission because of his financial constraints.
Chancellor said that students in this university are prepared to deal with various situations.
Earlier former Acting Vice-Chancellor and General Secretary AligarhMusliim University Old Boys Association (AMUOBA), Engr Zakkir Ali Khan in his intellectual discourse told the students that being students of this uuniversity, they were the real torch-bearer of the mission that had been undertaken by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan.
“We expect you that during your stay here and even thereafter you will follow the footprints of Sir Syed and Aligarh spirit for the cause of promotion of education and progress of Pakistan”.

The classes of the new entrants at Karachi University for the academic session 2008 will commence from January 10.
This was announced by the spokesman of Karachi University on Wednesday.
He said more than 4,000 students were admitted to various teaching departments of the institution. Meanwhile, the Vice-chancellor of Karachi University, Prof. Dr.
Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, has welcomed the new entrants. In a message on the occasion of the new academic year 2008, he reminded that they are now affiliated to a large institution of the country where their prime objective should be to acquire knowledge and education so as to get adequate acquaintance with science and
technology.

He advised that by enhancing their academic capabilities they must be prepared to meet the increasingly tough multiple challenges of modern time. The Vice-Chancellor asserted that a number of former students of Karachi University have been playing leading role in various fields of life and serving the nation and country which is an element of prestige and honor for themselves and their alma mater. This tradition of the varsity, he pointed out, should be carried on with more enthusiasm. Relating acquisition of latest knowledge and research in all fields of sciences as essential and the most significant source of bringing about progress and prosperity, Prof. Siddiqui urged upon them to devote themselves for studies benefiting from all modern facilities provided by the University of Karachi.

Libraries and laboratories when properly used can turn students into scholars, scientists, researchers and intellectuals, he said. A highly qualified, able and experienced team of faculty is available to help explore students potentials and to polish their skills.
Recalling the imagination of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah about the youth and students, Prof. Siddiqui said that Quaid-e-Azam always considered the younger generation as a highly precious asset for the country and nation. The golden principle of Unity, Faith and Discipline must be taken as a means of guidance throughout your varsity life and beyond, the Vice-Chancellor further informed the new entrants. At present time when literacy and acquisition of science and technology is making significant difference among the nations of the world, we as a whole nation, are in immense want of look forward to the enlightened profile of life and this is possible when we learn to seek knowledge making it a source of acquiring wisdom, he added.

He urged the new entrants to concentrate towards the acquisition of knowledge.
