DUHS holds orientation session for students enrolled with its programmes

Dow University of Health Sciences here on Monday arranged a series of introductory classes for degree programme in physical medicine, dental care and diploma as well as degree programmes in nursing and medical technology respectively. Students with different backgrounds and academic qualifications attended these classes in large number and appreciated the exercise under-taken for their orientation about the professional education they intend to pursue.
Concerned directors of the programme include Dr. Nabila Soomro (Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation), Dr. Sharaf Ali Shah (Institute of Nursing), Dr. Sarwat Hasan (Institute of Medical Technology) and Dr. Mohammad Amin (Dental Care School).
Dr. Nabila Soomro said the current academic session 2008 is witnessed to have the Institute’s first training programme in Prosthesis and Orthosis Sciences and second of its degree level programme in Occupational Therapy.
She said the 40 students enrolled with the occupational therapy programme would be trained in management and rehabilitation of the physically handicapped.
Dr. Soomro highlighted importance of the programme and called for establishment of more such institutions across the country so as to provide quality support to the impaired, either free of cost or at subsidised rates.
Dr. Sharaf Ali Shah said the curriculum of nursing training and education has been derived from Aga Khan University and that the DUHS Institute of Nursing was aimed at meeting the shortage of qualified and well trained nurses in the country.
Dr. Sarwat Hasan said the DUHS Institute of Medical Technology was presently offering training in four different fields including Operation Theater, Critical Care, Ophthalmology and Clinical Pathology.
Students are being offered diploma as well as degree level training in these four subjects so as to meet the acute shortage of trained technologists, Director, DUHS Institute of Medical Technology said.
Dr. Mohammad Amin cited DUHS Institute of Dental Care as first of its kind of facility in the country where diploma courses are offered to individuals interested and capable of being trained as dental technologists, dental hygiene technicians and dental surgery
assistants.

The fresh entrants to these institutes were also provided ith an pportunity to meet their teachers and get acquainted with the curriculum and details of classes they would be required to attend.
